June 14: Little Falls, MN Rest Day
Today is our last rest day before we arrive at the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Little Falls is the home of Charles Lindbergh! According to the Chamber of Commerce it is also the home to many "little falls".
We are in a motel on the outskirts of a town that in it heyday was probably very well off but today is dying. It's early claim to fame besides Lindbergh was the lumbering industry. Weyerhaeuser name is well known in these parts. Today its biggest claim to fame is that a Super sized Wal-Mart is going in next door and it will be the biggest in Minnesota.
Now, remember that Minnesota is also the home of the biggest mall in the world, Mall of America, so having the biggest Wal Mart in a dying town seems normal to the folks here.
All kidding aside, the town is a simple quiet town on the river -- which is now only 100 feet wide at its widest. Most of its inhabitants live outside the town but population counts have them at over 20,000. The schools are good size and new in appearance, so money doesn't seem to be a problem.
Today we had to say goodbye to Kathy -- she had to fly home to her son's graduation. We will all miss her, but know that another bike trip will appear on the horizon!!!
