November 10: Jonkerskoek Nature Reserve to Cape Town
Just outside of Cape Town is the Jonkerskock Nature Reserve, an area covering approximately 27,000 acres. The name Jonkershoek is said to hail from the 17th century owner of one of the freeholds that Simon van der Stel issued in the valley: Jan Andriessen, who had been a bachelor midshipman, was also known as Jan de Jonkheer and named his grant of land Vallei Jonkershoek.
Today the land is a park open to mountain bikers, hikers and anyone interested in communing with nature. Several trails crisscross the park over a variety of terrains allowing for any level biker to enjoy the scenery. Gravel or dirt makes it a mountain bike "biking trail" but with careful navigating it can still be fun for all.
