October 29-30: USA to Johannesburg, South Africa
Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and according to Wikipedia one of the 50 largest urban areas of the world. Located in the northern part of South Africa in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand hills, it is the centre of a large-scale gold and diamond trade, having been founded as a result of gold rush after discovery on a nearby farm around 1886.
Arriving late afternoon after a 15 + hour flight from the USA finds this writer in a daze and too tired to explore much of the area around the hotel. There is also a very high unemployment rate here resulting in a high crime rate. There is security both in and outside the hotel with the personnel advising not venturing out after dark unescorted. That means a early dinner and to bed!!
